Know your grass
Warm-season grasses like kikuyu, couch and buffalo are common from Glenbrook to Lawson and across the Hawkesbury. They grow fast in warm weather and go dormant or brown off after frost.
Cool-season grasses like tall fescue and ryegrass are common in the upper Mountains. They stay green through winter but slow down and stress in hot, dry spells.
Mowing frequency
- Spring and summer: every 1 to 2 weeks for warm-season lawns, about every 2 weeks for cool-season lawns.
- Autumn: every 2 to 3 weeks, plus leaf clearing.
- Winter: monthly or as needed. Don't mow frosted grass.
The one-third rule
Never remove more than a third of the leaf in one cut. Taking off more stresses the grass and lets weeds in. If the lawn has got away, bring it down over two or three mows.
Mowing height
- Kikuyu and couch: about 25 to 40 mm in summer, a little higher going into winter.
- Buffalo: about 40 to 60 mm.
- Tall fescue: about 50 to 70 mm. Taller grass shades the soil and copes better with heat.
